Bring on the autonomous cars! Things they don't teach in the drivers license handbook.

At lunch I pull up to a red light from a side street. There’s a lady (1st car in line) halfway in the turning lane, and half in the lane that goes straight. I’m sitting 5 or 6 cars back. I watch the light cycle complete 2 times without our side ever getting a green light. She’s not triggering either sensor in the pavement with how her car is positioned. I figure she’s going to inch forward any second and trigger it, or the truck behind her will inch forward eventually. Nope! 3 more cycles happen before I lose my patience, throw my car in park, walk up to her car, and ask her to move over a couple feet. She looks confused but obliges. Wouldn’t you know it we get a green light! I wonder how long all these people would of sat there if I hadn’t done anything.

What futuristic city do you live in that actually has sensor rather than timer lights?

Atlanta. They aren’t all sensored though. I’ve seen a number of lights change when there is no one perpendicular to get the green. After today I have to wonder which is better for traffic flow.

Almost all of the lesser-used lights here are sensor based. It’s terrible because the sensors don’t pick up motorcycles, so you often either end up turning left on a red or finding a different way.
